Our Story

Sama Sama was started by Kimberly Lardner-Burke and Max Basler in early 2018, bringing out clothing with a focus on an understanding of movement, unrestricted feelings and with compassion for the body. Most of our clothing is designed to be comfortable while maintaining style and using fabrics which are 100% natural.

Growing up in brands like Mad Dogs and Naartjie inspired us to create lifestyle clothing; in which anyone can enjoy the freedom of comfortable, unique clothing that ignites good feelings. Sama Sama meaning “You’re Welcome” in indonesian, plays on creativity through details, which is characteristically carried through each design, specifically in its colourful embroidery. Although the brand offers gendered pieces, the majority of their designs overlap and criss-cross, making for a collection of elegant inclusivity. The brand’s core intention is to offer “clothing designed to allow movement, unrestricted and with compassion for the body”.

Sama Sama is under a year old, and so far, we are selling from a few platforms being The Strangers Club, and The Neighbourgoods Market, 99Juta which is based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, and otherwise Instagram too.

We work with a local manufacturing company based in Diep River, and this comprises of 12 seamstresses. We have met each and every employee, and have a close working relationship with the owner as well as the employees. Our packaging is also 100% biodegradable, as we do our best to focus our ethos around sustainability as much as possible.
